Locations & Community Engagement

Gail Starr Indigenous Consulting brings unparalleled knowledge of Indigenous lands and communities, including hidden gems and culturally significant sites that may be unknown or inaccessible to traditional Location Managers. Our experienced team collaborates with your existing locations department to introduce unique, breathtaking locations while ensuring all necessary permissions and protocols are respected. We work closely with Indigenous Nations to uphold their wishes and guarantee that the proper groundwork is done before, during, and after production, creating a positive and respectful experience for all involved. Additionally, we provide access to Indigenous Production Assistants, Safety Teams, Catering, Locations, and Camera Assistants—ensuring that Indigenous communities are not only represented but actively engaged in the production process, generating economic benefits for their people and their Nation.

Indigenous Production Support & Building the Next Generation of Filmmakers

At Gail Starr Indigenous Consulting, we are committed to facilitating strong relationships between productions and Indigenous communities and ensuring that these communities benefit directly from the projects being filmed on their lands. We specialize in sourcing Indigenous production support, including Production Assistants, Camera Assistants, Location Scouts, Safety Teams, Catering, Security, and more—all from the Nations engaged in your project. By hiring locally, productions can significantly reduce costs associated with per diems, travel, and accommodations while benefiting from a team that intimately understands the land, its unique challenges, wildlife, and cultural significance. These local crew members also serve as invaluable cultural liaisons, helping to navigate communication, resolve misunderstandings, and foster a positive, productive working environment.

Beyond immediate production needs, our mission extends to the long-term goal of building a new generation of Indigenous filmmakers. By providing hands-on experience and mentorship, we help Indigenous community members see the film industry as a viable and sustainable career path that allows them to provide for their families while sharing their talents and perspectives. Creating opportunities within the industry fosters a sense of purpose, belonging, and empowerment, leading to a future where Indigenous stories are told authentically by Indigenous voices. Through these efforts, we support today’s productions and contribute to a thriving, inclusive, and representative film and television industry for years to come.
